A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman voiced hope in Beijing on Tuesday of cementing the country's exchanges and cooperation with Japan on matters concerning the Beijing Olympic Games.

Spokesman Qin Gang told a regular press conference that China welcomes world leaders, including those from Japan, to attend the opening ceremony.

Qin explained that statesmen and foreign leaders would be invited by the Olympic committees of their respective nations.

China, the spokesman said, has noted Japan's wishes for China's successful hosting of the games. Qin also noted the support and greetings offered by the Japanese people during the Olympic torch relay event in their country.

"We hope the two could forge closer exchanges and cooperation linked to the Beijing Olympics to ensure the success of the sport event in Beijing, and in Asia," Qin said.
