Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyuon Monday met with Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez to discuss efforts to further China-Uruguay relations.
The two countries have witnessed a steady development of bilateral ties since forging diplomatic relations two decades ago, Hui said.
The mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Uruguay is in conformity with the fundamental and long-term interests of the two peoples, the Chinese vice premier said, adding that China is willing to work with Uruguay to bring relations to a new height.
President Vazquez offered his condolences to the Chinese people in the wake of the strong earthquake that shook China's southwestern Sichuan province Monday afternoon.
Vazquez said Uruguay attaches great importance to developing links with China and is keen on deepening mutual cooperation and ties.
He also wished the upcoming Beijing Olympics every success.
Hui, who arrived here Saturday on an official visit, has canceled a planned tour to Argentina to return to his country following Monday's deadly earthquake.
The 7.8-magnitude quake has killed over 9,200 people in eight affected provinces and municipalities, the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs announced Tuesday. Source:Xinhua
