On May 12, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, hit Wenchuan County of southwest China's Sichuan Province at 2:28 p.m. The disaster touched the hearts of Chinese nationwide, as well as thousands upon thousands of overseas Chinese hearts.

When encountering such a catastrophe, when witnessing lost lives, and when seeing compatriots losing homes, everybody thinks: what can I do for the victims in quake-hit areas?

PD Online received a letter from 9-year-old twins Xu Ping and Xu Bin in the U.S., which has moved all the editors. The twins feel sad for the children in the quake-hit areas; and they would like a chance to donate some money to them.

This concern indicates the Chinese sensation that blood runs thicker than water also indicates that Chinese nationalities are endowed with strong vitality.

Chinese Version

The letter is as follows:

To the children in the quake-hit areas:

We just learned about the strong earthquake in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province, China. We watched CCTV4 and saw the devastation caused by the earthquake. We felt very sad that many buildings got destroyed and people got hurt. We were particularly worried about thousands of children in the affected area….. We imagined that their school could be destroyed or damaged, and they would need classrooms, desks, blackboards, new books and school supplies…… We wish we could join the rescue team to help the children there. But we are thousands of miles away. We called our father who is currently in China. We asked him how we could help the children in the area. We got an idea. We would like to donate our piggy banks (a jar for our small savings) to a most severely affected elementary school. We asked our father to write a check on our behalf and send it to the Red Cross Society of China. We hope that all the Chinese children either inside China or overseas do the same. One person can only help a little, but if millions of people all work together, we can make a big difference.

We wish all the children in the affected area well.
We want them to know that we are thinking of them.
We hope that they will be back to school soon.

Sincerely,

Benjamin Xu
