Some international organizations have extended their sympathy and condolences to China over the May12 major earthquake in southwestern China through the Chinese Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva.
Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Margaret Chan expressed deep condolences to the victims in the earthquake.
She said WHO is willing to provide assistance and help for China and she was convinced that the Chinese people would soon rebuild their homes.
Salvano Briceno, director of the secretariat of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), said he was confident the Chinese government would conquer the disaster and the ISDR is willing to provide help for China.
He praised the Chinese government for its swift and highly efficient mobilization after the quake, saying it has set a model for the world.
Geneva United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said it has an assistance team comprising of members from 35 countries, which is ready to offer help in case China needs it.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it will appropriate 250,000 Swiss Francs (some 237,000 U.S. dollars) from its emergent disaster relief funds to support relief efforts of the ICRC in China.
The International Labor Organization said the swift mobilization of the Chinese government after the earthquake was "admirable."
The United Nations Commission on Human Rights and the United Nations Disarmament Commission expressed condolences to the victims in the earthquake at their respective ongoing meetings.
Ambassadors to the United Nations Office at Geneva from Russia, France, Britain, Germany, the United States, Switzerland, Italy, Pakistan, Myanmar, Brazil, Costa Rica, Chile, Bangladesh, Cuba, Argentina, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela also expressed condolences and sympathy to the earthquake victims and the disaster regions.
A 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked southwest China's Sichuan Province Monday afternoon, killing at least 14,866, according to the latest government statistics.
