Some 70 members of Japan's Matsuyama Ballet Troupe, headed by Masao Shimizu, visited the Chinese Embassy here Wednesday to mourn the victims of last week's devastating earthquake in China's Sichuan province and extend condolences to those affected.

"We are here today to express our heartfelt condolences and deep sorrow to the Chinese people," said octogenarian Masao Shimizu, the founder of the ballet troupe.

"It was a great honor for me to be visited by Chinese President Hu Jintao during his (recent) visit to Japan," said Shimizu.

"I will devote myself to Japan-China friendship till the last breath," he said.

Established in 1948, the Matsuyama Ballet Troupe visited China as the first envoy of the Japan-China Cultural Exchange Association in 1958. During their stay in China, the troupe staged "The White-haired Girl," a ballet adapted from the Chinese opera of the same name.
