Dutch Queen Beatrix praised the Chinese government on Wednesday for its rescue efforts after a devastating earthquake hit southwest China on May 12.

The queen made the comment in The Hague while receiving credentials from the newly-appointed Chinese ambassador to the Netherlands, Zhang Jun.

She said the world is impressed by the rescue operations in which many people braved the danger of aftershocks to try to rescue victims. She expressed her sincere hope that the Chinese people would overcome difficulties and rebuild their homes.

The queen again offered her condolences to the victims of the earthquake and their families.

She said she believes the upcoming summer Olympic Games in Beijing will be a success.

Recalling her previous visits to China, the queen said she was impressed by diligence, bravery and creativity of the Chinese people. She said she is pleased with the healthy development of the Dutch-Chinese relations.

Zhang thanked the queen for her message of condolences which was sent to the Chinese leadership shortly after the May 12 earthquake. He also thanked the Dutch government and people for offering relief aid to the quake-stricken area.

With the help of the international community, the Chinese people will succeed in rebuilding their homes, Zhang said, adding that the people are capable and confident of hosting a successful Olympic Games despite of the earthquake.
