Liu Yandong and Alexander Zhukov, the Chinese and Russian chairmen of the joint committee on cultural and humanities cooperation, vowed on Friday to further promote cultural cooperation between the two countries through their committee.

Liu, who has just succeeded former Chinese State Councilor Chen Zhili as the chairman of the joint committee, told visiting Zhukovin a meeting that she will make joint efforts with the Russian side to bring the joint committee into full play.

She said both sides should fully implement regular cultural programs, such as the 2009 Russian language year in China and 2010Chinese language year in Russia.

Liu also thanked the Russian government for its timely and effective support and aid to China in response to the May 12 earthquake and spoke highly of the current development of the Sino-Russia strategic partnership of cooperation.

Zhukov expressed condolences to the Chinese government and people over the quake disaster, on behalf of the Russian government, saying Russia was greatly impressed with the Chinese government's effective, orderly relief work and admired the Chinese people's bravery in facing the disaster.

He said Russia was ready to make joint efforts with China to consolidate the achievements of the joint cultural committee, to promote bilateral cultural cooperation.

Zhukov accompanied Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on a state visit to China.
