The Chinese people, with ample courage, will decisively defeat the quake disaster that hit southwestern China last month, the top diplomat of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) said Monday.

Under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese people will also overcome the aftermath of the earthquake and successfully hold the Beijing Olympic Games, DPRK Foreign Minister Pak Ui Chun said during a visit to the Chinese Embassy.

Pak added that he witnessed personally a vigorous and brand new China in his visit to the country in April.

Liu Xiaoming, Chinese ambassador to the DPRK, expressed his appreciation for the condolences and donations offered by the DPRK to the quake victims.

He said the calamity is the touchstone of the friendship between the two countries, adding that the DPRK was always standing by China in the disaster.

A major earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale jolted Wenchuan county in China's Sichuan province on May 12. The death toll from the quake rose to 69,019 nationwide as of midday Monday Beijing time, while 18,627 people are reported missing and the number of the injured has reached 373,573.
