Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin Friday expressed his gratitude to rescue and medical workers who have just returned from China's quake-hit region.

During a meeting with the rescue workers, Putin said the team members took an active part in the large-scale rescue and relief operation in southwest China's Sichuan Province, which was rocked by an 8-magnitude earthquake on May 12.

"We have every reason to be proud of you," the prime minister said.

An agreement on exchanging rescue experience has been reached between the Russian Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Chinese colleague, according to Putin.

Once the coordination mechanism is established, it will be very helpful for the two neighboring countries to cope with such natural disasters, Putin said.

Russia was among the first to dispatch rescue and medical teams to China. It was also the first country to send humanitarian aid to the quake-hit region, and to invite students from the area to recuperate in its territory.
