The Chinese people and army are making united efforts to reconstruct the earthquake-stricken areas, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported Saturday.

The Communist Party of China and the government attach top priority to the life and property of its people and are going all out to help people in the affected areas to regain their normal life, said the paper.

Roads, railways, telecommunications and electricity in the quake-hit areas are being resumed, while tens of thousands of stores and factories are reopened, it said.

As relief work goes on, many touching stories were reported, said the paper, citing stories such as soldiers braving danger to rescue victims and teachers sacrificing themselves to protect their students.

The whole country has been supporting the disaster areas with tents, food, fuels and clothes, the newspaper reported.

A devastating 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit southwest China's Sichuan Province on May 12. The death toll has reached 69,130 as of Saturday, while 17,824 people are still missing, according to official figures.
