Rolls-Royce, the world's leading provider of power systems will design and equip one of the world's most advanced seismic research vessels for China, the company said on Monday.

The 26 million U.S. dollar contract is its first such contract in the important Chinese market for offshore seismic vessels.

The seismic streamer vessel has been ordered by BGP Marine China, a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Company (CNPC). It will operate worldwide in support of oil and gas exploration and production.

The Rolls-Royce designed NVC 830 seismic research vessel is twin-screw with a direct-drive propulsion system, improving towing capabilities for the 14 streamer cables, outfitted for autonomous operations year round in both shallow and deep waters.

The integrated solution from Rolls-Royce also includes engines, main propellers, steering gears and automation system. The equipment is to be delivered by early 2010.

The Rolls-Royce marine facility in Shanghai is the company's largest investment in China to date.

The Marine business of Rolls-Royce employs 7,000 people in 34countries with the main manufacturing centers being in the UK, the Nordic countries, the United States and increasingly Asia.

Rolls-Royce has been present in China for over 45 years. In addition to Marine, the Civil Aerospace and Energy businesses have a strong presence in China.

Rolls-Royce business in China has grown rapidly in recent years. In 2007, the value of Rolls-Royce purchasing in China across all its businesses exceeded 200 million U.S. dollars, and is set to grow substantially from that level.
