Overseas Chinese in Portugal have welcomed the resumption of talks between the Chinese mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), according to a statement obtained by Xinhua on Tuesday.
Blood is thicker than water, the Business Association of Overseas Chinese in Portugal said in the statement.
The compatriots across the Taiwan Strait are of the same origin, have the same language and belong to the same Chinese nation. This is an inalterable fact, the statement said.
On June 12, ARATS and SEF chairpersons Chen Yunlin and Chiang Pin-kun held talks in Beijing, marking the first round of talks between the two organizations in nine years.
The two sides signed agreements on weekend chartered flights and travel by mainland tourists to Taiwan.
The resumption of talks and the subsequent agreements have drawn the keen attention of overseas Chinese in Portugal, and illustrate the great cohesion of the Chinese nation and its wisdom to achieve the final goal of reunification and national revitalization, the statement said.
It expressed confidence that the resumption of talks between the ARATS and the SEF will promote cross-Strait exchanges, leading to the resolution of existing political and economic differences.
