Dr. Seppo Kääriäinen, First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Finland, expressed his hope for the success of the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 5th Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting (ASEP) on June 19 in Beijing, he said that the whole world would be "looking at China" and the Olympics "belong to us all."
He believes that great games reflect "the true Olympic spirit of openness, freedom and fair play" and in effect, "contribute to the understanding between peoples and nations."
Strengthening dialogues between different cultures is one of the two issues to be discussed at the meeting.
The ASEP was launched in 1996 and is designed to promote mutual understanding between the countries and people of Asia and Europe through communication and exchanges between parliaments. The meeting is held once every two years alternating between Asia and Europe.
