Senior legislator Wang Zhaoguo met here Thursday with delegates attending the fifth Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting (ASEP).

Wang, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met with Deputy Speaker of Parliament of Lithuania Alfredas Pekeliunas, First Deputy Speaker of Finnish Parliament Seppo Kaariainen, Vice President of the Romanian Senate Norica Nicolai and First Vice Chairman of the Hellenic Parliament Georgios Sourlas respectively, in which they discussed the parliamentary exchange and its role in promoting Asia-Europe cooperation.

Wang said the ASEP, through which the parliament members can play a special role and enhance mutual understanding of peoples in Asia and Europe, is an important channel to promote the Asia-Europe meeting.

The NPC attaches highly importance to relationship with parliaments of ASEP member countries, and is willing to have more dialogues with them, so as to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation, and contribute more to the friendship between Asian and European countries.

The senior legislator also extended gratitude for the support from the four nations for China's earthquake relief, as well as their firm adherence to the one-China policy.

ASEP, initiated in 1996 and held every two years in Asia and Europe in turn, is aimed at enhancing mutual understanding between Asia and Europe through increased dialogues among parliaments.
