Visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Friday attended a ceremony to mark the beginning of construction of a key stadium in the Mongolian capital.
Xi expressed hope that the stadium, being built with financial support from China, would help Mongolian athletes enhance their sporting capabilities.
"I hope the stadium will also be a symbol (of the friendship) between China and Mongolia," Xi said.
Mongolian Economy Minister Chultemiin Ulaan said the stadium, with a capacity of over 5,000, would contribute to the development of sports in the country.
In 2006, the Chinese government agreed to provide 110 million yuan (some 15.99 million U.S. dollars) to Mongolia to build a modern stadium. The stadium, which is expected to be the biggest in the country, will be completed in 2010.
