Slovenian Ambassador to China Marjan Cencen, who is also presidency of the European Union in Beijing, said here Friday he welcomed the re-opening of China's Tibet Autonomous Region to foreign tourists and journalists.
"I welcome the decision of the Chinese authorities allowing foreign tourists to visit Tibet Autonomous Region again, starting 25 June 2008," said Cencen in a statement.
He said he believed this action will serve well to bring further development of economy and tourism and the region as a whole.
"I am also glad to learn about a group of foreign journalists visited Tibet this week as well. The EU has always supported the idea of openness of the TAR for foreign tourists and journalists," he said.
Tibet re-opened to foreign tourists on Wednesday after a stoppage of more than three months due to the March 14 riot in the regional capital of Lhasa.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said on Thursday foreign journalists in China may apply for entering Tibet in line with previous procedure.
"The re-installed stable situation in Tibet accords with interests of all the Chinese people, including the Tibetan compatriots, and is also in the expectation of the international community," Liu noted. Source: Xinhua
