The UN chief, who toured the site of the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing, said that he was "so much impressed by the preparedness" of the event.

"It was the most spectacular Olympic facilities I have ever seen," he said.

"I was so much impressed by such great strength of the Chinese people who have made the Olympic Games preparations to such a magnificent way, even after the earthquake disaster," he said.

"I was so much grateful and I extended my deep congratulations to the Chinese people," the secretary-general said.

Ban voiced his confidence that this Olympic Games will be the "most successful one" in the Olympic history, and will provide "a venue and forum" where all athletes and all the people around the world will not only compete in sports, but also promote "mutual understanding and peace, stability and prosperity."
