The Chinese government has implemented policies to protect the development of the traditional cultures of minority groups, and it treats all minority groups equally. Tibetan culture, with its long established history, has enjoyed protection during its development, said Professor Hu Yan, a member of the Chinese Tibetology delegation that is visiting New Zealand.

On July 28, the Chinese Tibetology delegation held a symposium in Wellington with overseas Chinese, exchange students, and Chinese media. Professor Hu Yan, a Tibetan history scholar at the Central Party School, pointed out that the Chinese government has worked extensively to preserve minority cultures, and many of their efforts are not widely known. Using the 100 yuan bill as an example, he said, "Perhaps very few people have noticed that this paper does not only have Chinese characters and pinyin, but also four minority languages – Mongolian, Tibetan, Uighur, and Zhuang – along with Braille. This shows the attitude the Chinese government holds toward minority cultures."

Another member of the delegation, Professor Qiang'eba Ciyang, who is also the vice principal of Tibet University, said that the Ministry of Finance gave 540 million RMB to expand the campus of Tibet University, and the school specializes in Tibetan traditional culture, including religion, art, music, dance, theater, and other subjects. She said Tibetan culture is highly emphasized, and the school conducts Tibetan language tests, which all students are required to pass. Tibet now has Tibetan language input software, Tibetan language text message functions on cell phones, and other accommodations for Tibetan people.

That day, the Tibetology delegation was also interviewed by journalists from New Zealand English newspapers, the Dominion Post and the Press. In response to the reporters' questions, the head of the delegation, Professor Xiraonima, who is also the vice principal of the Central University for Nationalities, said the delegation's purpose was to paint a true picture of Tibet through academic exchange with scholars and communication with media. After the 3/14 incident in Lhasa, few Western media have reported on the issue in an unbiased manner, and this is hard to bear.
