Chinese President Hu Jintao met Thursday with President of the Republic of Serbia Boris Tadic, who is in Beijing to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games and other activities.
Calling President Tadic an old friend of the Chinese people, Hu said that he appreciated the support given by the Serbian government and people to the Beijing Olympic Games.
He also took the opportunity to express gratitude for Serbia's "sincere compassion and precious assistance" when China was hit by a devastating earthquake in May.
Tadic said he was very glad to see China's achievements in hosting the Olympic Games, and was impressed by the tremendous changes that have taken place in Beijing over the past seven years of the Games' preparation.
More than 80 heads of state and government and royals will attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, scheduled for Friday evening in the National Stadium in north Beijing.
