China said on Wednesday it welcomed Russia's announcement to end military operation in Georgia's South Ossetia.

"China welcomes this, and hopes the move can help peacefully resolve disputes through dialogues and realize peace and stability in the region," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang in a written statement in response to a journalist's question.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced Tuesday an end to military operations in South Ossetia, the Interfax news agency reported.

China had expressed "serious concern" over the escalating conflict in South Ossetia last Saturday, calling for a ceasefire.
