Joseph R. Donovan Jr. has arrived in Hong Kong and assumed his duties as the new Consul General of the United States of America in Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions.

"I am especially pleased to be arriving during Hong Kong's hosting of the Olympic equestrian events, and my family and I look forward to attending the competition this weekend," Donovan said Friday after he arrived in Hong Kong.

He said Hong Kong truly is "Asia's World City" as an economic dynamo and Macao's growth and development are also impressive since it returned to China in 1999.

"The United States has a multitude of ties to Hong Kong -- economic, administrative and cultural," he said, "I hope to work with the government and the people of Hong Kong to maintain and deepen our close cooperation including promoting free trade and opportunities for U.S. business, countering threats to global security and health, and combating terrorism and proliferation."

Former Consul General James B. Cunningham left off his post in July.
