Rescuers were searching for 17 sailors who went missing after their cargo ship ran aground in typhoon Hagupit in south China.

The cargo ship "ZEUS" from the Republic of Korea (ROK) ran aground off Shangchuan Island off the coast of south China's Guangdong Province on Wednesday noon.

A salvage ship from the South China Sea Rescue Bureau struggled to reach the island despite the Hurricane-level gale.

Rescuers found the broken vessel on the rocks after three hours' searching, but all the 17 crew members were missing.

On Tuesday, British freighter Maersk Kithira was also badly battered by strong winds and high waves off the Guangdong coast.

Henry Rossgraham, 52, the chief engineer, and first mate Gareth Collier, 49, were injured.

The ship arrived in the neighboring Fujian Province on Wednesday. Rossgraham died in hospital because of severe back injuries and broken legs. Collier left for Kaohsiung, Taiwan, aboard the ship on Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Meteorological Observatory, Hagupit, the 14th strong typhoon this year, landed in Maoming, Guangdong on Wednesday morning.

It left China on Thursday morning and moved into Vietnam, downgrading to a severe tropical storm as it did so.
