A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Zhou Yongkang, on Wednesday vowed to seek stronger cooperation between China and Vietnam.

Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, met briefly with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung early Wednesday.

Zhou said the frequent exchanges between the two leaderships have injected vitality into the growth of China-Vietnam ties.

"The two parties and nations share common development goals, enjoy similar political systems, pursue same development paths and stay in the stages which are alike," Zhou said.

Zhou said China would like to make joint efforts with Vietnam so as to seek deeper and more comprehensive cooperation, promote the sustainable and rapid economic growth and strive for social harmony and stability in the two countries.

Dung lauded his recent China visit as "fruitful." During the visit last week, Dung also attended the seventh summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) on Oct. 24-25.

Dung said both Vietnam and China were faced with unprecedented opportunities and challenges in their development.

He noted Vietnam would like to step up coordination with China, jointly respond to the complex and volatile international financial situation, therefore contributing to the stable growth of the regional economy.

Hanoi was the first leg of Zhou's five-day visit here. He will also travel to Nha Trang City in the coastal province of Khanh Hoaand Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam.
