Senior CPC official meets Ho Chi Minh City's party chief

A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Zhou Yongkang, on Friday visited Ho Chi Minh city, the last-leg of his five-day Vietnam trip.

"I am glad to come to the city named after Ho Chi Minh, who isa great leader for Vietnamese and a close friend of Chinese," Zhou, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, told Ho Chi Minh City's party chief Le Thanh Hai.

In a meeting with Hai, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee, Zhou said the visit "enabled him to have a deep understanding of the opportunity to develop China-Vietnam ties."

During the visit, Zhou met with Vietnamese leaders, including CPV chief Nong Duc Manh and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

He also attended a theory study jointly held by the CPC and the CPV, which focused on discussing issues concerning agriculture, rural areas and farmers.

China and Vietnam are friendly neighbors, and the two peoples share time-honored friendship, Zhou said.

"The two parties and states should work together to carry forward the friendship and step up the mutually-beneficial cooperation," he said.

Hailing Ho Chi Minh City's leading role in Vietnam's reform drive, Zhou said the city also enjoyed good friendship with some Chinese metropolis and provinces, like Shanghai and Guangdong.

"We would like your city to seek stronger cooperation with Chinese cities on fields of trade, economy, science, technology as well as culture," Zhou told Hai.

In response, Hai said his city would make its unique contribution to promoting the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership of cooperation.

As for city-to-city ties, Hai said Shanghai was the first city to forge sister-city relations with Ho Chi Minh City, which now has so far enjoy such relations with more than ten cities worldwide.

Hai also congratulated Zhou on his successful visit to Vietnam and stressed the great significance of cooperation between the two socialist countries of Vietnam and China.

Earlier Friday, Zhou also visited a local public security bureau in downtown Ho Chi Minh City and a China-Vietnam industrial park on the suburbs.
