Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang met here on Friday with Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Chan was attending the WHO Congress on Traditional Medicine, which runs from Nov. 7 to 9.
Li said traditional medicine had played an important role in maintaining public health, and it would be further developed under the direction and support of the WHO.
China had paid equal attention to both Chinese and Western medical treatment and was trying to enhance its traditional medical system, he said, adding that China would continue its cooperation with the WHO.
He said meeting the needs of public's basic health was the government's responsibility and China would reform the medicare system and devote more resources to public health.
Chan said the WHO would continue to support China's public health efforts and develop traditional medicine.
