Russia has hailed the agreements reached by both sides of the Taiwan Strait earlier this week, saying the success of the recent talks would contribute to regional peace and security.

"This important event will help strengthen peace and security in the Taiwan Strait region," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Saturday.

Russia applauded the positive results of the talks between Chen Yunlin, president of the Chinese mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), and Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), earlier this week in Taipei.

During the talks, the two sides signed four agreements on direct shipping and flights, postal services and food safety.
