Chinese President Hu Jintao and other leaders from the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) gathered in Lima Saturday to exchange views on strengthening regional cooperation in dealing with the world financial crisis and other pressing issues.
According to a Chinese diplomat, President Hu will elaborate on China's position at the two-day meeting on issues such as the current world economic and financial situation, food and energy security, and make proposals to expand the APEC cooperation in various sectors.
The president is also expected to join other leaders in dialogues with representatives of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) and exchange views on world economy and the financial crisis.
Under the theme of "A new commitment to the Asia-Pacific Development," the annual meeting will focus on the issues such as the world financial crisis, supporting the Doha Round of negotiations at the World Trade Organization, food and energy security, regional economic integration, corporate responsibility, climate change and disaster prevention and reduction.
Established in 1989, APEC is the premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region.
Currently, APEC's 21 members are Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, China's Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.
