Chinese President Hu Jintao said Saturday that China would work with Papua New Guinea to strengthen the two countries' friendship and promote bilateral ties.
Hu made the remark at a meeting with Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Michael Somare on the sidelines of the 16th Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum held in Lima, Peru's capital.
Hu said relations between China and the Pacific island country have maintained a sound momentum of development since the two countries established diplomatic ties 32 years ago.
The two countries have frequently exchanged high-level visits, continued to deepen mutual political trust and steadily broadened cooperation in such fields as trade, agriculture, culture, education and health care, Hu said.
China and Papua New Guinea have also conducted close consultation and coordination in international and regional organizations, said the Chinese president.
Hu said the Chinese government would continue to encourage and support Chinese enterprises' investment in Papua New Guinea and provide economic and technical support to the island country.
"China is willing to make concerted efforts with Papua New Guinea to strengthen communication and cooperation in multilateral affairs," He said.
Somare appreciated China's support and aid to his country in investment, infrastructure construction, medical service and health care.
Papua New Guinea welcomed Chinese companies' investments and cooperation in energy and resources, the prime minister said, adding that China's economic and technological support to south Pacific countries is very important for the region's development.
