The latest annual report recently released by the American Institute of International Education (IIE) showed that for American students, to study abroad is gradually gaining popularity, and China is becoming one of the most attractive destinations. In 2008, the number of American students coming to China to study increased by 25% over the previous year.
For most American students, the "traditional" study abroad destinations are European countries such as the UK, Italy, Spain, and France. Now China is following closely behind, despite students still referring to Mandarin Chinese as "one of the world's most difficult languages." Allan E. Goodman, President of IIE, pointed out that in the past, the vast majority of American students went to China to learn Mandarin or Chinese history, but now, with China's rapid economic growth there are many students who hope to study China's economic and political systems.
This year, influenced by the global financial crisis, the number of American students hoping to study in China using scholarships as financial aid has nearly doubled from last year. Those American colleges' exchange programs to China have also become a hot option which many students are competing for.
