China's Ministry of Health said in Beijing Sunday that Chinese medical-assistance teams have conducted more than 260 million treatments in 69 foreign countries and regions.
Since 1963, when the Chinese government dispatched the first medical-assistance team to Algeria, more than 20,000 Chinese medical workers have participated in the mission. About 700 of them were honored by foreign governments for their outstanding professional contributions.
The ministry said China currently has 50 teams, consisting of 1,278 medical workers, in 123 medical stations in 48 developing countries. Team members are outstanding professionals recruited from hospitals nationwide. After fixed-term stints in various countries, these doctors and nurses would return to their work in China.
Minister of Health Chen Zhu said the Chinese government is going to strengthen cooperation in medicine and health with developing countries for the health of mankind and social progress.
