Results of the "Most Influential Overseas Experts during China's 30 Years of Reform and Opening-up" were announced on November 20. Many people actively participated in the selection process, and fifteen overseas experts are elected.

Henk Bekedam, former World Health Organization’s chief representative in China who fought the SARS epidemic hand in hand with the Chinese people;

Ieoh Ming Pei, outstanding Chinese American architect of the 20th century;

Werner Gerich, the first foreign factory manager in China since reform and opening-up;

Ian Fok Chun-wan, the Hong Kong entrepreneur who for decades has devoted himself to charity and the training of domestic talents;

Lee Tsung-dao, the scientist who concerned about the science and technology of the Chinese motherland;

Edwin Maher, the first foreign news anchor on China Central Television (CCTV);

Robert A. Mundell, an economist who has paid close attention to China’s economic development, often referred to as the “Father of the Euro”;

Morihiko Hiramatsu, the Japanese expert who teaches the “One Village One Product”, a regional development program in China;

John Thornton, visiting professor at Tsinghua University who receives an annual salary of just 1 dollar;

Susan Sabriye Tenberken, an “envoy of light” for blind children in Tibet;

Moris Topaz, sometimes compared to Dr. Bethune (the Canadian doctor who gave his life to help the Chinese during the Anti-Japanese War), for his work at the Wenchuan Earthquake relief site;

Hain Verbruggen, meritorious figure of the Beijing Olympics;

Yang Chen-ning, the first Chinese American scholar to visit his home country since the founding of PRC;

Toyama Seiei, a Japanese desert control expert;

and Hara Shoich, a Japanese expert devoted to rice cultivation in China.

The selected experts were chosen from 29 candidates by a panel of judges. These candidates had been recommended by relevant departments that are responsible for recruiting international talents in China. The judging panel was composed of 38 senior experts from the People’s Daily, the People’s Daily Online, CCTV, China International Publishing Group, China Human Resources News, Peking University, the Shenzhen General Chamber of Commerce, the China Society for Research on International Exchange and Personnel Development, and those who have long-term specialized experience in introducing overseas talent to China. The results were based on the "contribution” and “influence” of the overseas experts.
