The European Union (EU) on Tuesday welcomed the launch of the first direct air and sea links across the Taiwan Straits earlier this month, saying that these links give "concrete expression" to the agreements reached in unofficial talks between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan in November.
In a statement issued by its French presidency, the EU also said the November talks "help to build confidence and mutual understanding necessary to strengthening cooperation and stability" in the region, adding that it hopes this process will continue.
On Dec. 15, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan started direct air and sea transport and postal services amid warming ties, ending a 59-year ban on such links. Formerly, air and sea movements -- including mail -- had to go by way of a third place. Source: Xinhua
