Ambassador Chen Mingming says Sino-Swedish relations have great potential

Chinese Ambassador to Sweden Chen Mingming has said that Sino-Swedish relations have kept a good momentum of development over the past year and will have great potential for further development in the new year.
He made the remark Tuesday in an exclusive interview with People's Daily Online correspondent in Stockholm.
Recalling the past year, Ambassador Chen said that in political and sport fields, there have been high level visits. After Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Sweden in June 2007, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt hade visited China twice this year, once in April and once in October when he attended the Asia-Europe Summit in Beijing.

In April, Prime Minister Reinfeldt attended Boao Forum and held talks with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. A number of agreements or letters of intend have been signed concerning bilateral cooperation in sustainable development practices and corporate social responsibilities. One of the letters of intend is about to establish a sustainable city in Tangshan city north China with the cooperation of the Swedish side.
During the Olympics in Beijing in August, Swedish King Carl XVI Gustav and Queen Silvia attended the opening ceremony of the Olympics and Crown Princess Victoria attended the opening of the Para Olympics in Beijing.
After the earthquake happened in Wenchuan in southwest China, Swedish government, companies and society have also gave a lot of support to the victims.
Ambassador Chen said that in economic field, bilateral trade hade also seen a good momentum. From January to October, bilateral trade volume reached 8.5 billion US dollars which was 20% more than the same period of last year.
Being asked about future prospect of bilateral relations, the ambassador said that great potential can be tapped in energy saving technologies and sustainable development practices.
"Global financial crisis can possibly affect bilateral trade, but China has decided to boost the economy by increasing domestic demand. Thus, China badly needs energy-saving and clean technologies and sustainable development experiences. Sweden has been remarkable in achieving 44% economic growth since 1990 without increasing carbon dioxide emission but decreasing it by 9%. This area sees great potential for bilateral trade and cooperation." said the ambassador.
"China is also aiming at establishing resources-saving and environment-friendly as well as harmonious society. Sweden has a lot to offer in these areas such as a complete medical care system, social security and environment-friendly society. " added Ambassador Chen.
Next year, Sweden will be the rotary presidency of the European Union. The ambassador is optimistic that Sweden will exert a positive role in further improving relations between China and the European Union.
