During a press conference organized by the State Council Information Office (SCIO) on December 30, Wang Chen, Minister of the SCIO, said, according to statistics, this year China set a new record in the number of foreign journalists it received and, during the Beijing Olympics alone, the nation received more than 30,000 foreign journalists. Statistics also revealed that during the disaster relief period of the Wenchuan earthquake, Sichuan Province witnessed over 800 visits by foreign journalists in the disaster-afflicted areas.
Wang said the SCIO held a total of 83 press conferences in 2008, the largest annual number in its history.
Next year the SCIO will gradually improve the news delivery systems and the guidelines for news spokespeople in each department, strengthening the transparency of work within the Party.
He said the SCIO will help remove the obstacles that foreign journalists encounter when gathering news in local areas, providing methods to make it more convenient and smoother for reporters to do their work in China.
March of next year will mark the 50th anniversary of Tibet's implementation of democratic reform. Relevant departments and Tibet Autonomous Region will all hold activities to commemorate and celebrate the liberation of millions of emancipated serfs. Wang said if foreign journalists plan to cover news in Tibet, the SCIO is willing to offer assistance.
He pointed out that the local government of Tibet Autonomous Region stipulated that foreigners must follow the local government's relevant regulations when entering Tibet and these regulations are also applicable to foreign journalists. With conditions improving step by step, procedures regarding foreigners visiting Tibet will be further simplified and the SCIO is promoting work focused on this area.
