Singapore on Thursday welcomed Chinese President Hu Jingtao's six-point proposal to promote the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations, saying that this is a very significant development.
"This is a very significant development that Singapore welcomes," the Singapore Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Hailing President Hu's six-point proposal as "a historic opportunity" to definitively end cross-Straits tensions, the ministry said that this will be good for the Chinese people on both sides of the Straits and for the region as a whole.
"Improved cross-Straits relations will enhance stability and prosperity for all of us," the ministry said.
President Hu offered six proposals to promote the peaceful development of the cross-Straits relationship in a speech to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the mainland's "Message to Compatriots in Taiwan" on Wednesday.
Hu said the Chinese mainland was willing to discuss with Taiwan proper and reasonable arrangements for Taiwan's participation in international organizations, as long as this does not create a scenario of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan".
