Nearly 100 Palestinians living in Nicaragua took to the streets of the capital Managua on Wednesday to protest against Israel's incursion into the Gaza Strip.
Waving Palestinian flags, some enraged protestors destroyed a monument shaped like a seven-branched menorah, a candelabrum that represents the Israeli national emblem.
They used shovels and hammers to topple the monument in the center of the city and replaced it with a Palestinian flag.
Palestinian Ambassador to Nicaragua Walid Al-Mua'qat, who also took part in the demonstration, said Israeli troops must immediately cease their offensive and withdraw from the Gaza Strip.
Organizations allied to Nicaragua's ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front party voiced support for the protest, saying they hoped the international community would call for an immediate truce in Gaza to avoid more civilian casualties.
More than 700 have been killed and some 3,000 wounded in the conflict since Israel launched air strikes on Gaza on Dec. 27 and ground operations on Jan. 3 in retaliation for rocket attacks on southern Israel by Gaza militants led by Hamas.
