Two hundred and thirty-one countries and international organizations have confirmed participation in the Shanghai World Expo 2010 as of February 23, an official with the Expo executive committee said here Thursday.

Zhong Yanqun, deputy director of the committee, said in a press conference held here this morning that the 231 attendants included 185 countries and 46 international organizations.

She said 184 countries and international organizations have so far signed participation contracts with China.

The Expo will feature two highlights: a showcase of the best examples and ideas of how cities can be developed, and an online Expo that will allow people around the world access to the Expo's offerings.

According to Zhong, more than 100 cultural activities will be held during the six months and a summit will be held to discuss urban sustainable development.

The gala is due to be held from May 1 to Oct. 31 next year.
