China said it hoped the United Nations will play a bigger role in responding to the international financial crisis.

Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping made the remarks Friday when meeting with the visiting president of the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann.

"Coping with the financial crisis is the primary task for the international community nowadays," Xi said. He stressed that developing nations were faced with especially unfavorable conditions during this financial turmoil.

The international community should try to decrease the damage to developing countries caused by the crisis, and ensure resources for them, in a bid to help them conquer difficulties and achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), he noted.

China, although faced with difficulties itself, will carefully implement all of its commitments to help the progress of developing nations, especially African nations, the vice president said.

Brockmann said China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council as well as the biggest developing country, had played an important role in the UN's work. It also effectively replied to global threats and challenges.

He said the United Nations and the UN General Assembly would increase communications and cooperation with China.

Brockmann, who took up his one-year term in September 2008, came to pay an official visit from Feb. 24 to 28.
