Britain started construction of its pavilion for 2010 Shanghai World Expo on Thursday.

The pavilion covers an area of 6,000 square meters.

Two gingko trees were planted on Thursday at the ground-breaking ceremony.

The pavilion looks like a box with thousands of spines that hover without visible support above a public square.

The construction will be completed in May 2010.

Altogether 185 countries and 46 international organizations have so far committed to participate in the expo.

The World Expo 2010, with the theme of "Better City, Better Life," will be held from May 1 to Oct. 31 next year and is expected to attract 70 million visitors.
