Chinese President Hu Jintao said at the second Group of 20 (G20) financial summit in London Thursday that further support should be given to developing countries in the fight against the global financial crisis.
Some developing countries are now suffering from deteriorating economic and financial conditions and increased social and political turmoil, Hu said.
Although the international financial crisis has caused difficulties for all countries, "we cannot for this reason stop the process towards the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)," Hu said.
"We should continue to push it forward, for this is conducive to restoring global economic growth," said the Chinese president.
Hu called on the international community to minimize the damage of the financial crisis on developing countries, especially the least developed countries. He also urged the world community, developed nations in particular, to assume due responsibilities and obligations.
They should "continue to fulfill their commitments to debt reduction and aid, take concrete measures to maintain and increase assistance to developing countries, help them uphold financial stability and promote economic growth, give a helping hand to developing countries, especially African countries, as they work to overcome difficulties, and improve the external environment for the development of these countries," Hu said.
The second G20 summit concluded in London on Thursday with consensus on how to save the world out of the financial crisis, including a pledge of 1.1 trillion U.S. dollars to revive the world economy, a joint call to fight protectionism and concrete actions to tighten banking regulations.
