Visiting Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong met with former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in New York on Sunday.
Liu spoke highly of the development of Sino-U.S. relations over the past 30 years.
"With concerted efforts made by both sides, China and the United States have made long strides in bilateral relationship, which is not only conducive to the two peoples, but vigorously promoting world peace, stability and development as well," she said.
"As a trailblazer and eyewitness, Dr. Kissinger has made important contributions to the development of Sino-U.S. relations," she said.
Noting bilateral relations are "at a new starting-off point," Liu said Chinese President Hu Jintao and U.S. President Barack Obama reached important consensus on working together to build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship in the 21st century when they met in London on April 1.
"This has set the orientation for the China-U.S. relations in the new era," she said.
The "primary objective" of her current U.S. visit is to implement the consensus of the two heads of state and promote exchange and cooperation between China and the United States in as many fields as possible, she said.
Promoting bilateral exchange and cooperation in science, technology and education constitutes an important part in the entire bilateral relations of the two countries, she said. "They have greatly boosted the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples," she added.
Echoing Liu's views, Kissinger said that the U.S.-China relationship is one of the most important bilateral relations in the world. At a time when many countries are becoming increasingly interdependent, the United States and China should strengthen dialogue, exchange and cooperation in all possible areas.
The meeting between Obama and Hu was vitally important to the bilateral relations in the future, Kissinger added.
He pledged to continue to help the two sides promote cooperation in culture, education, science and many other fields.
Earlier in the day, Liu met with overseas Chinese and some Chinese students studying in New York.
On Saturday, she met with Bob Niderlander, CEO of Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment, which produces many of the world-renowned musicals on the Broadway.
Liu arrived in New York on Saturday, kicking off her official visit to the United States.
