More than 100 Chinese and Russian soldiers put out a fire that ravaged on grassland on the national border, said firefighters on Thursday.
According to an officer surnamed Zhang, the fire, near the PortManzhouli of north China's Inner Mongolia, was discovered by patrolling soldiers at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Russian territory less than 100 meters away from the port, where dozens of vehicles were waiting.
More than 60 Chinese soldiers and 40 Russian soldiers spent about one hour to extinguish the fire despite the wind, Zhang said.
No casualties were reported.
Size and cause of the accident is being investigated, but Zhang told Xinhua that Inner Mongolia was on high alert of fire due to drought in this season. He didn't rule out the possibility that the fire could be caused by farmers burning the grass for reclamation.
