FM spokesman: UN resolution demonstrates int'l opposition to DPRK's nuclear test

The unanimously-adopted UN Security Council resolution demonstrates clearly the common opposition of the international community to the nuclear test conducted by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in Beijing in a statement Saturday.

Qin was commenting on the newly-adopted UN Security Council resolution which relates to the nuclear test conducted by the DPRK on May 25.

In disregard of the wide opposition of the international community, the DPRK once more conducted the nuclear test, to which China has voiced resolute opposition, Qin said, noting China voted in favor of the UN Security Council resolution.

The DPRK's action "violates relevant UN Security Council resolutions, impairs the effectiveness of international mechanism of nuclear non-proliferation, and also undermines peace and stability in the northeast Asia," said Qin.

China supports the UN Security Council's "appropriate and balanced" response, and has taken part in relevant negotiations with a responsible and constructive attitude, he said.

China maintains that as a sovereign state and also UN member, the DPRK's state sovereignty, territorial integrity, reasonable security concerns and development interests should be respected, Qin said.

The DPRK should enjoy the right of peaceful use of nuclear energy after it returns to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, Qin said.

Sanction is not the goal of the UN Security Council action, while political and diplomatic channels are the "solely right way" to solve the Korean Peninsula related issues, he said.

Qin said the newly-adopted resolution also sent a positive signal to the DPRK, and has reserved possibilities for peaceful solution of the Korean Peninsula issue through dialogue.

China reiterates that it is of common interests of the involved parties to realize denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, non-proliferation and peace and stability of the Peninsula and the northeast Asia region.

China calls on relevant parties to maintain cool-headed, refrain from any action which could worsen the situation, and workout solution through consultations and dialogue.

China would continue its unremitting efforts to this end, the statement added.
