Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong met here Thursday with a delegation from the NBA team Washington Wizards.

The current visit could not only be a retrospect and commemoration of the visit made by the Wizards 30 years ago, but also could further bilateral sport exchanges and friendship between the two peoples, said Liu.

Previously known as Washington Bullets, the Washington Wizards visited China in 1979 as the first NBA team to do so, when the two countries established diplomatic relations.

Liu hailed the team's visit 30 years ago which opened the door of communication between the two countries' basketball players.

According to the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the delegates include Gheorghe Muresan, one of the tallest men to play in the NBA, and Wes Unseld, one of the 50 greatest NBA players in history.
