President of China's Xinhua News Agency Li Congjun said Friday that Xinhua was willing to carry out cooperation in the TV field with Time Warner, a media and entertainment conglomerate.
Li made the remarks during a meeting with Stephen J. Marcopoto, president of Turner International Asia Pacific Limited, the broadcasting division of Time Warner, who is in Beijing to attend the World Media Summit.
"We hope that through cooperation in TV and other fields, the two media organizations can consolidate ties and promote common development," he said.
Xinhua has launched a TV news service to expand its growth.
The summit, running from Oct. 8-10, gathered about 300 representatives from more than 170 media outlets from around the world, including wire services, newspapers and magazines, radio and television broadcasters, and on-line media.
It was jointly launched by the Xinhua News Agency, News Corporation, AP, Reuters, ITAR-TASS, Kyodo News, BBC, Turner Broadcasting System and Google Inc..
During the meeting with Li, Marcopoto said the convening of the summit was a breakthrough and he was honored to witness the historic moment.
He said Chinese President Hu Jintao's presence at the summit opening ceremony and exchanges with global media leaders were unprecedented and demonstrated the openness of the Chinese government.
At the opening ceremony held in the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing Friday morning, Marcopoto told the media delegates that Time Warner was eyeing China's faster market expansion after the government issued a new plan to encourage private and foreign investment in the cultural sector.
The company was "particularly interested" in the plan to lower the market access threshold for the entry of private and foreign capital to the cultural fields, and "excited" to learn that multimedia broadcasting, Internet and mobile TV would be promoted actively, he said.
