First batch of China's fifth peacekeeping squad returns from Sudan

The first batch of 220 soldiers and officers of China's fifth peacekeeping squad returned home Thursday after finishing their mission in Sudan.
The fifth squad consisted of 435 peacekeepers from engineering, transportation and medical corps. Their mission in Sudan began in mid February.
During the eight-month mission, the engineering corp finished tasks including construction of a new army camp and expansion project of an airport.
The medical team received more than 800 patients and distributed more than 2,000 poliomyelitis vaccines for local children.
The squad was awarded a medal of honor for peace by the United Nations.
The second batch of 215 peacekeepers will return on Oct. 30.
China first sent peacekeepers to join UN peacekeeping efforts in the war-torn region of southern Sudan in May 2006.
