The world media summit held in Beijing earlier this month has provided a platform for exchanges among participants from world media organizations, Reuters Editor-in-Chief David Schlesinger said Thursday.

In an interview with Xinhua, Schlesinger said people got together to talk about the subject of mutual interests, such as media's struggle to overcome the financial crisis, social responsibility and technology.

Schlesinger noted that during the summit, Chinese President Hu Jintao gave a very important speech on the role of media within China and across the world.

Schlesinger has had long-time contacts with China since he paid his first visit in 1979. He was posted in Beijing during 1991 and 1994 as a Reuters correspondent. Even now, he visits Beijing at least once a year.

"As China wants its markets to be more international, the media in China has to take its responsibility seriously and China as a society has to help the media to do that by being more open and more transparent," he said.

Founded in London in 1851 by Paul Julius Reuter, Reuters was the first Western news agency to forge cooperation with Xinhua. In May 1957, the two sides signed a deal on news exchange.

"I think we are very lucky that we've had a good relationship and a close relationship for over 50 years with Xinhua," Schlesinger said.

"It was very meaningful for me years ago when I went to China to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Reuters-Xinhua cooperation. We are now talking about renewing that agreement and extending that agreement," he added.

Schlesinger also hailed the host of the media summit by Xinhua. He said the most impressive thing is the way Xinhua organized the whole event. It is really an accomplishment to be able to bring so many people from the world's media together in one place, he noted.

"I think every participant was impressed by Beijing, impressed by Xinhua and impressed by the fact that so many leaders of the world media come to gather there," he said.
