Two people were killed during an attack on Sunday at China’s Zijin Rio Blanco copper mine project in a remote area of northern Peru, according to Reuters.
The mining camp was invaded by 15 armed - and two V-Sur security workers were fired at. The armed group also set fire to the mine area. The amount of property lost is still unclear at present.
Located in northern Peru, not far from the Ecuador border, the Rio Blanco project is the world's largest unexploited copper-molybdenum mining area with nearly 7 million tons copper reserves.
Rio Blanco copper project was bought by Zijin Mining Group Co., Ltd from Monterrico Metals in 2007. However, due to security concerns, the project was not started until January this year. Zijin plans to invest 1.44 billion U.S. dollars in the Rio Blanco copper project and after completion the annual production can produce 200,000 tons of copper.
According to Reuters, Peru is one of the largest mineral-exporting countries and the locals always dispute with foreign companies and local government for mineral and oil projects. Incidents of violence always break out in this area. In 2005, one protester was killed and two dozen others were tortured when townspeople mobilized to stop construction of the mine.
