Chinese president ends visit to Malaysia

Chinese President Hu Jintao ended his visit to Malaysia and left Kuala Lumpur Wednesday for Singapore, where he will pay a state visit and attend the Economic Leaders Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

During his visit here, the first by a Chinese head of state in the past 15 years, President Hu met Malaysian Supreme Head of State Mizan Zainal Abidin and Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak.

They exchanged views on the development of the strategic and cooperative partnership, and other issues of common concern.

President Hu and Malaysian leaders pledged to make joint efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation, so as to benefit their peoples and make contributions to peace and development in the region.

Representatives of the two countries signed documents of cooperation during Hu's visit.

China-Malaysia relations have developed smoothly since the two countries established diplomatic relations 35 years ago, with exchange of frequent high-level visits, increasing political trust and fruitful cooperation in various sectors.

Malaysia has become China's largest trade partner among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The two-way trade between the two Asian countries reached 53.47 billion U.S. dollars in 2008, two years ahead of a target of 50 billion U.S. dollars set by the Chinese and Malaysian leaders.

The two countries have also worked together to promote cooperation in East Asia and maintained coordination to deal with the international financial crisis.

President Hu arrived in Kuala Lumpur Tuesday afternoon.
