Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy's training ship "Zheng He" returned to a naval base here on Sunday after a 20-day visit to the Republic of Korea (ROK)and Japan.

At the invitation of the ROK's navy and Japan's maritime self-defense force, the vessel has visited the ROK's port of Chinhae and Japan's port of Kure.

During its visit, the training vessel sent four Chinese naval cadets to training schools in academies of the ROK's navy and Japan's maritime self-defense force to receive two-day training and study.

In return, two cadets from Japan's maritime self-defense force and ROK navy respectively were invited on board the "Zheng He" to receive training with their Chinese counterparts.

This was the first time for foreign cadets to take part in the whole course of navigation training on a Chinese naval vessel, according to Rear-Admiral Liu Yi, the PLA Navy's deputy chief of staff, who was the commodore of the voyage.

Of nearly 370 people on board the vessel, 230, including 16 female, were cadets from four academies under the PLA Navy. They have had a variety of professional exchanges with their ROK and Japanese counterparts.

The training ship was named after Zheng He (about 1371-1433), a Chinese navigator and diplomat who led seven maritime expeditions to as far as the east coast of Africa for the emperor of Ming Dynasty about 600 years ago.

The vessel has been in active service for more than 22 years and has sailed for a total of more than 280,000 nautical miles.
